To start off I had used programs such as Canva and Facetune which was really instrumental for my magazine. I had taken the photos for my magazine on my friend’s Canon camera which I was familiar with so I knew exactly which settings I wanted to use to create the vibe for my magazine. I used my phone to edit the pictures if it was needed on Face Tune for example, for the table of contents I used the edit button to change the brightness of the picture to give it a more mellow aura. For the CCR I used Imovie which I am also familiar with and I just uploaded the photos I wanted to discuss for each question and recorded the audio for it. Another program I used was blogger which I used to insert all my blog entries and every process that I took to create my magazine. Lastly, I had to upload all the CCR questions to youtube which I was also familiar with. This whole process was fairly easy and straightforward to me just because thankfully I knew how to do everything already.

During this project, I had to use programs that I had never used before such as Canva. The thing that is cool about Canva is that they have templates for everything so making this magazine really gave me a lot of inspiration. You could also add shapes and images that they have there to spice up anything. For my cover, I had added things that were already there in Canva which fit perfectly into the theme and saved me a lot of time. I had to learn and watch many videos on how exactly to upload photos and how to make the background color different and also how to crop the photos to my liking. Next, I had to use Imovie for the Critical Reflection which thankfully I am familiar with which made this process a lot easier. Overall this is a great experience for me and I learned a lot through Canva and will definitely use it in the future for other projects.

Since my magazine is all about equality I thought it would be fitting to have my target audience be both women and men of any age. To make it very inclusive the colors also are what is stereotyped as pink being girly so men would not feel embarrassed or ashamed for picking it up. On the cover, I included words such as man and girl so it targets the audiences I wanted. I had engaged with my audience by stating simple, clear, and bold statements all on the cover and continuing it on the table of contents to really have reader engagement. The articles will engage both men and women because they have articles that both genders may be interested in which I think will further keep them intrigued by the magazine. I plan to distribute my magazine online just because it’s a magazine that’s just starting out I would not have the money to print it and it would definitely not be competitive enough to stand next to higher brand names. Also by distributing my magazine digitally it has a higher percentage of being read than if it were to be printed as you can see in the chart.

Hi, my name is Megan Costa today I want to talk to you about my magazine Venus since the beginning of this project I knew wanted it to be for women more specifically women’s issues such as equal rights in society. As you can see here in this mood board that I made at the beginning of the year I did include both genders women and men. I wanted my magazine to advertise to women of all ages and men who were willing to be educated on these topics. And I included the color scheme that I wanted to incorporate in the magazine. When researching what fell under the category of women’s magazines I quickly realized that most of these magazines are about fashion, makeup, and fitness. I didn’t quite want my magazine to follow those conventions in the sense that I did all my articles to just be about fashion or just be about make-up or fitness I want my magazine to open about the wage gap or inequality. Here is a list of what is considered a woman’s magazine. We have Vogue which is just a fashion magazine. I feel like these magazines didn’t represent the social group that I was going to. These magazines are created for white women and you can see that more than half of the covers are white women with blonde hair. Which isn’t the diversity that I was looking for but wanted to include in my magazine. At the end of my research, I discovered what I didn’t want in my magazine. I feel like I didn’t follow conventions in the sense that I didn’t broadcast fitness or makeup instead I talked about inequality. My model for the cover was a woman which is a signature trait in magazines. I had many eye-catchers on my cover that can give a potential consumer a more in-depth look at what was stored inside the magazine. Such as “it’s a girl thing” and “men of quality don’t feel equality”. Now moving on to my table of contents in other magazines such as cosmopolitan I had noticed that their table of contents had one picture which I wanted to stick to. By adding red it made it more eye-catching. Following my mood board with red. I had also brought forth issues such as sexism and women activists who are making a change in their communities. Lastly for my spread, I feel like I put my own twist on it I wanted my feature spread to have to point of view on inequality from a man and women’s perspective. I feel like it’s what made my magazine different from others. I had even made the pages two different colors to help differentiate with a photo and headline of a man. And the other page with the man and women to illustrate that they are isn’t inequality. In the feature spread, it discusses how schools should talk more about these topics of inequality and teach kids fairness. Although my social group mainly focuses on women a man could also consume my magazine and educate themselves on the importance of equality. Overall my magazine both challenges and used conventions of women’s magazines as well as talks about women’s issues.

Production: Final Feature Spread

 

 

The before and after, I am so happy with how the end product came out. So much back and forth, the hardest thing was having to make a decision on whether it looked good or not I asked many of my friends for their feedback because I needed reassurance. 

Editing my Feature Spread

 I went through a lot of editing and trying out different formats on how to make this feature spread exactly what I wanted a lot of back and forth. I first changed the background and added a sticker I even changed the main photo used. I added other photos I thought fit perfectly in this spread that I just could not leave out. I really do love the flow of the spread and everything. The process took a while but the end result was worth it.

 While editing my feature spread I noticed the white background stood out too much so I added a beige background that matched the most with the rest of the magazine. I truly feel like it goes more with the flow of the magazine and the color scheme.

Interview #2

1. When was the first time you have seen or experienced gender inequality? 

-" It was at age 15 I was a freshman in high school. My teacher asked for a volunteer to pass out the history books and when I volunteered my teacher said 'No let one of the boys do it." I had  protested against it and said "why can't I ?" the teacher responded with " the books are too heavy for a girl." In disbelief, I got up and grabbed four books at a time, and started handing the book out to my fellow classmates. Every class after that my teacher would complain and argue about how I would distribute the history books I  educated the teacher on how what he said was sexist and disrespectful. The teacher apologized and since that year he tells the stories to everyone." 

2. How did that make you feel? 

-" It initially made me feel little and weak. And then out of nowhere I got angry and knew better." 

3. How did you know how to go about it? 

-" I thought of the most peaceful way, I had no idea." 

4. Were you scared that you were gonna get in trouble for protesting? 

-"Of course, but I still did it for the future generation." 

Preliminary Feature Writing Practice

 Someone called 18 people in the city last night. The caller identified himself as the president of Rutherford Ford, Inc., 2780 Doss Boulevard. He told each of the people that they had just won a new car from his dealership. Interviewed by reporters today, most of the people who received the calls said that at first they just couldn't believe it. And they were right. They couldn't. The person who called was a prankster, and Allen Rutherford, president of the dealership, says he has no idea who placed the calls, and that he's spending all his time today trying to explain the situation to those 18 people. "Someone apparently has a sick idea of humor," Rutherford said. After convincing people they had won a new car, the caller asked them to drop by the dealership this morning to pick it up. All 18 were there when the dealership opened its doors at 9 a.m. "I told them we never offered to give away a car," Rutherford said. "One woman told me she couldn't believe she'd won, and then she told me she couldn't believe it when I told her she hadn't. Two other women began to cry, and a man is threatening to sue me."

Bright and early in the morning 18 people stand in front of the car dealership awaiting their free car. The president of Rutherford Ford Inc., Allen Rutherford arrived that morning in confusion and has been trying to understand and explain the situation to these 18 individuals who received a mysterious call saying that they won a free car. Many people in tears and others in frustration as one man tried to sue the dealership. All of this work and confusion was from one unknown caller, a prankster. "Someone apparently has a sick idea of humor," Rutherford said.

 Interview Questions: 

1. Many males would not consider themselves a feminist and yet you do why is do you consider yourself a feminist? 

- "I am a proud feminist because I see how hard my mom and sister work and how much things are harder for them especially being a woman of color." 

2. Did you grow up with two parents? 

- "No, my father left when I was little, so my mom and older sister practically raised me. Guess you can say two women raised me." 

3. What is your perspective on women on the internet?

- Women are so sexualized and are seen as sex objects, which discourages me because some of my guy friends have said some nasty things about women so I try to steer away from that." 

4. What do you hope in the future for mankind? 

-" I hope that men can be real men and fight for equal rights." 

5. One thing you hope and wish men can learn from you? 

- " I am a proud feminist and support and treat all women equally and with respect. Like a true man would." 

Preliminary Task: Table of Contents

 

For the table of contents page, I used a template from Canva called Orange photos of Mongolian people to travel magazine. 

While I was creating the table of contents page I looked for some equality magazines for some cover story ideas. I eventually settled on a few and came up with catchy names for the feature stories. This is what I have right now but my contents page might very well change because I do not like the main picture that is used here.

 This is the final product of my table of contents. In my last blog post about the table of contents, I said I would be changing the main picture for here and I did. The picture here matches so much more than the last one and It fits the flow of the magazine perfectly. I am so happy with the way it came out. The hardest part was the text and the colors I needed but wanted I had to put a white border around the text in order for people to read what the components are which I am not in love with but it works.

The topic I have chosen for my model magazine is a magazine for women and men who believe in gender equality. I have taken some pictures that I think could best represent this topic. 

Putting Together My Feature Spread

 

  I decided to use the picture I had edited in one of my earlier posts because I felt like it was perfect in the sense that her smile seemed genuine, unlike some of the other pictures, and her head was tilted in a nice way and her hair was perfectly placed (in some of the other pictures there are rebellious hair strands.) Overall it was a nice picture with a soft, girly touch to it. I knew I wanted the picture to be by itself on one page like I had previously seen in magazines such as Nylon but I also wanted to place a quote of hers in a big font, also by itself. Since I obviously couldn't do that I put the picture and the quote on the same page. This is where I really wanted to show off the bold color scheme that I desperately desired, so I started formatting the background of the picture/quote page.

I used white to format the background. Once I added the picture and formatted the quote everything was looking perfect to me. The quote says "Fight like a girl" which I thought fit perfectly for the magazine.

     Afterward, I started to write up my article. As I got deeper into the article, I began to run out of space to write and when I stepped back and looked at it, it just looked like a big blob of text that I'm should no one would be a thrill to read. For that reason, I split the text up into 2 columns, it fit more text and didn't look as bulky.
 Overall, I am pretty happy with my feature spread, I honestly didn't believe that it would come out as nice as it did but it did!

How Women are Viewed in the Media

 

Women, especially women of color, play roles that are hypersexualized and submissive. Many times they are shown as terrorists, unintelligent, or "the help". It wasn't until Gravity in 2013 that little girls could see a female astronaut on screen. Black women did not get their own magazine till the creation of Essence in the 70s. Media has a much bigger impact on society than we think. Acknowledging the history of media and its exclusion of women representation, I plan to make my magazine diverse and equal. I will cater my content and images to many demographics and include many perspectives on it.

Table of Contents Research

 

I like both the equality and feminism genres of magazines. I plan to combine those two. I would like to model the table of contents by using the template Orange Photos of Mongolian People Travel Magazine.

• Table of contents pages is created to allow the reader to easily find important sections in the magazine. 
• My table of content will be a one-page spread. 
• They are usually organized in the order that the stories appear in the magazine. Contents should be organized in subsections and in page order.

The three examples above are my favorite. I like the simplicity of each page. They have simple font and numbering and a photo that represents the magazine.
