Title of my Magazine

When doing research for my magazine I knew what I did not want as a title, I knew I wanted something edgy and bold and striking but powerful. Something that spoke to women but as a secret code almost. I had a list of titles that goes as followed, Fever Dream, Lotus magazine, and the symbol of the Roman goddess Venus. Which is commonly used to represent the female sex.

which all of this in mind I chose the title Venus Rome Magazine. It stands for more than what meets the eye at first glance.

Mood Board

https://highmoon-studio.com/

Putting together my mood board for my magazine really helped me realized what kinds of colors, fonts, textures, and photos I want for my actual magazine. It also helped direct my idea from a vague concept to a more specific one.

As I was looking through the different magazines, I realized that I did not want a brighter color scheme. Instead, I wanted a darker cover and when you open my magazine it is the opposite. I want my magazine cover to reflect the seriousness of my magazine, But when you turn the page the theme would shift into equality and optimism.  At first, I had issues picking out the colors. I had purple and pink in mind, but finally, I went with red, black and white, because it just fit my magazine so well. The red adds some variety to the color scheme and attracts readers.
I had trouble deciding if I wanted a Sans Serif font or a Serif font. Honestly, I am still a little indecisive in this aspect. As for texture and pictures, I wanted to go with industrial and bold pictures for my mood board.
I knew the models in my mood board had to be very serious to match my theme. The picture to the left of the mood board I think is perfect for my magazine; it’s just what I wanted. In my opinion, it was the best picture on my mood board; I wish it had been bigger so I could have put it in the center.  She looks content and empowered, which will be a sub-theme of my magazine.
Overall, this mood board really helped me orientate myself towards a specific color scheme and theme for my future magazine, and I’m glad I have this mood board to look at when I’m feeling lost in this process.

Demographic for my Magazine

 Who is your demographic?

"The demographic trend is toward a younger population" mainly women and of any race.

I will best represent my demographic by adding a picture of someone on the cover of my magazine to that demographic to draw out attention to others.

Canvas

Today in class we went over many different magazine covers to get inspiration for our very own magazines. We also went into the canvas and tried to use the website and construct a practice or cover. The website was a little difficult at first to understand but after a while, I got a hold of it.

covers I saw that inspired me:

Representation of women in the media

How are women represented in the media?

Women are portrayed as housewives, victims, or models. Men are typically characterized as powerful and dominant with little room for alternative ideas of masculinity.

Around the world, women are far less likely than men to be seen in the media. This gender-imbalanced picture of society can reinforce and perpetuate harmful gender stereotypes.

First, women are underrepresented which falsely implies that men are the cultural standard and women are unimportant or invisible. Second, men and women are portrayed in stereotypical ways that reflect and sustain socially endorsed views of gender. Third, depictions of relationships between men and women emphasize traditional roles and normalize violence against women.

Women are portrayed as significantly younger and thinner than women in the population as a whole and most are depicted as passive, dependent on men, and enmeshed in relationships or housework

Survey

For this portion of my magazine, I am surveying students to see what types of styles they prefer such as the colors that stand out to them and to see what my audience is like such as the demographic and what motivates them to make a change.

  1. My magazine will be a lifestyle and women empowerment magazine focusing on women's consumption and to redefine the idea of beauty and the concept of what a traditional women’s magazine is and should look like. Do you like the magazine concept? *
  2. Should the content be fact-based or story-based? For the story-based example, I would be focusing more on interviews and other people's testimonies. *
  3. Do you practice self-care?
  4. Would you be interested in doing a simple social experiment and writing about your experience? This social experiment is to present to women a good habit to add to their daily self-care routines. The experiment includes looking in the mirror and saying "I love you, you are strong, & beautiful" every day to see the effect it has on their self-image.
  5. What emotions motivate you to make a change (fear, anger, etc.)?
  6. Do you struggle with your self-image?
  7. Which color stands out more to you?
  8. Would a female model catch your attention more than a group of females?

Genre Declaration

State the genre of your OG magazine

The genre of my first magazine was a pet magazine.

Change to explain how you arrived at this decision

I thought it would be too basic and something I would lose interest in later down the road. I then chose a female empowerment lifestyle magazine to encourage women to be confident and help them with everything it takes to be a woman.

Explain why you chose to create a magazine in this genre.

I chose this genre because I am a feminist and women empowerment is something I am very passionate about for years now I think I can bring a cool design and way of thinking to this lifestyle magazine.

State which three magazines you will focus on as models for your magazine

-Fever Dream Magazine

-Lotus Magazine

-Cosmopolitan Magazine

Ethnic Groups

My ethnic group is most likely to be black African American, Hispanic, to white. Although my magazine is an all-inclusive magazine, any race and ethnic group can learn and be inspired by my magazine.

As a result, my magazine is to combat stereotypes and promote more positive representations in the media. Even though this is very critical to do but I have hope I can accomplish this.

General Representation in the Media

Representation is how media texts deal with and present gender, age, ethnicity, national and regional identity, social issues, and events to an audience. Media texts have the power to shape an audience’s knowledge and understanding of these important topics.

This makes them very powerful in terms of influencing ideas and attitudes. In order to analyze media texts to determine how they've represented ideas and issues, it's important to be familiar with some of the key terms.

Mediation

This is the process everything goes through before it reaches an audience. This can be how a film script is written and re-written before it makes it to production, how newspaper or magazine photographs are cropped and captioned, or how real-life events - like a protest or a speech by a politician - are portrayed in a news report.

Stereotypes

These are a simplified representation of a person, groups of people, or a place, through basic or obvious characteristics - which are often exaggerated.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/z9fx39q/revision/1

For example, Vicky Pollard from Little Britain is a stereotypical example of a working-class teenage girl. They can be used to describe characters quickly, relying on existing audience recognition. Stereotypes are dangerous as they can lead audiences to generalize about people or places.

Distribution

what did you learn about distribution?

the action of sharing something out among a number of recipients.

Distribution is one of the four elements of the marketing mix. Distribution is the process of making a product or service available for the consumer or business user who needs it. This can be done directly by the producer or service provider or using indirect channels with distributors or intermediaries.

how are you currently considering distributing your magazine?

by posting a blog it will be accessible for all to see.

Distributing your digital magazine over a website is a great option if there are no resource constraints. Creating a complete blog for the magazine helps in reaping long-term benefits and gaining popularity in the magazine market.
Beneficial for both publishers and readers, the magazine issues or articles can be easily uploaded, updated, and read by the readers. The audiences have

create a digital magazine
the freedom to access the magazines as and when desired using various browsers on phone or desktops. Every single piece of content has a designated page with lots of interactivity and scope of improved user engagement. Adding video and impressive images to gain, retain, and grow more audience is just a click away. It allows a better communication flow between the publisher and user in terms of comments and feedback.
