Representation of women in the media

How are women represented in the media?

Women are portrayed as housewives, victims, or models. Men are typically characterized as powerful and dominant with little room for alternative ideas of masculinity.

Around the world, women are far less likely than men to be seen in the media. This gender-imbalanced picture of society can reinforce and perpetuate harmful gender stereotypes.

First, women are underrepresented which falsely implies that men are the cultural standard and women are unimportant or invisible. Second, men and women are portrayed in stereotypical ways that reflect and sustain socially endorsed views of gender. Third, depictions of relationships between men and women emphasize traditional roles and normalize violence against women.

Women are portrayed as significantly younger and thinner than women in the population as a whole and most are depicted as passive, dependent on men, and enmeshed in relationships or housework
