First Thoughts on House Style

Blog Post #7

I believe that house style is significant for magazines to have because they use specific editing rules/conventions which are used by writers and editors to ensure stylistic consistency in a particular publication or series of publications. House style can also be used in newspapers, journals, websites, and books.

Basically, a house style is a set of rules which state, for example, how all magazines in that series will be formatted, the colors, font style, and size text that will be used.

House style is essential to use in all magazines in a series or genre. The readers need to know the identity of what this specific genre or magazine series looks like, so it is easily identifiable instead of a magazine genre or series having different colors and fonts that look messy and unprofessional.

Conventions

  • Blog Post #6

  • A convention includes the themessettingcharacters, plot, narrative structure, mood, props, or significant objects for that specific magazine. The following consists of the required codes and conventions for most magazines Masthead (title) Selling lines, Cover lines, Strapline/slogans

    • Price/barcode, and Cover image/model/celebrity. Conventions are the generally accepted ways of doing something.
    • There are general conventions, such as interviewee quotes in a print article, but conventions are also genre-specific. Codes and conventions are used together in any study of the genre. It is not enough to discuss a technical code used, such as camera work, without saying how it is conventionally used in a genre.

Genres

 Blog Post #5

  • There are many different magazines genres such as Teen magazines,
  • Gossip magazines, Gardening magazines, Video games magazines, Fashion magazines, Football magazines, and Health magazines.
For readers, genres help organize information to make sense of what they are about to read. Genres create expectations. Familiarity with genres also makes life easier for readers. If they have a general idea about how research reports work, they can read them faster and make sense of the information in them more quickly. Genres also provide the writer with general organizational patterns that can help them arrange what they say and say it.

Research on Magazines Blog #1

Blog Post #4
Today we conducted the first round of research for our magazines. We went over the history of magazines and different examples of magazines that are well known and have been around since the '80-'90s. We learned about the shortage of people reading magazines nowadays due to technology and social media becoming more used. Also learned about how magazines became cheaper to produce.

Looking at all these different styles, genres, and concepts of the magazines, it assured me of what I am passionate about, what I find exciting, and what I want my magazine to look like.

My initial idea was to do a pet magazine, but I felt it was unoriginal as my other classmates might be doing that. So I looked into women empowerment magazines, and I enjoyed the topics and covers that were published. The Siren Magazine from The University of Oregon was the most aspiring as it illustrated such strong and expressive women. I have some ideas about how I would like to create my magazine. I want it to look clean and polished, with the cover being a strong and powerful woman on the front of it.

A Bit About Me

 Blog Post #3

As a student, I am very hard working and like to get everything done right when assigned work or a task. I work well alone, due to me being strategic and decisive. I always make sure everything gets done. Very on top of my work and making sure I do everything correctly.

I am taking this course to learn more about media studies and gain credits for my Cambridge diploma.

I plan to attend Florida Southern College and study Criminology, which is the study of crime.

My hobbies include playing soccer, hanging out with my sister, and playing with my kitten.

Reflection on Syllabus

  Blog Post #2

Some useful prior experiences needed to complete these tasks are researching, planning, time managing, creativity, and evaluating my work. At the same time, being able to work alone and having to make critical and stressful decisions.

I look forward to working on the magazine portion, the most being able to choose the format, and what goes inside is going to be a lot of hard work but rewarding at the end. Also, learn more about media products and texts. Lastly, I look forward to working alone to see what I come up with as the final product.

An aspect that makes me nervous is making sure we follow through all the requirements, making it look presentable, and that we get it done on time.

From this course, I hope to learn how to analyze media products.

 Ready to get to work!

Introductory Blog

Blog Post #1

Hi, my name is Megan, and this is the beginning of my introductory blog.

This blog will be utilized to document my research and planning of my media product. I have decided to do a magazine cover and a content page, and a double-page spread, for my AICE Media Studies Foundation Portfolio.

Along with this project, I will be working alone to complete this magazine.

Skills that will benefit in creating this magazine and blog is my time management and computer skills.

I will learn many different skills, for example, analyzing and how to construct media products using technical and creative skills.

The summation that I will be following during the process of this project:

Main Tasks:

* Develop my parts of a magazine, precisely a front page (cover), contents page, and double-page spread. (4 pages)

* Research contents of other magazines, topics, and themes for my magazine.

*Completing the magazine alone.

*Planning and taking notes for the production of the media product.

*All images and texts that will be utilized must be original content. (4 images minimum)

This blog will also show any developments of my ideas to better improve my work, the process of planning the magazine, the production of it all, the research behind the magazine, and an objective reflection of my work conclusion.
